MAGS Fall 2020 Events!

We were not able to get together this past spring in Milwaukee, but we are offering a series of social and programmatic events to keep us connected throughout the entire Fall semester!  This Fall MAGS Virtual Conference consists of social hours, a learning series, and the feature event, which includes a keynote and introduction of the MAGS 2020 3MT winners.  Click here for more information!

MAGS 2021 Call for Papers – Deadline September 30, 2020

I hope you are well, whether working remotely, back on campus or some combination of the two. 

This is a reminder of the September 30 deadline for the call for papers for MAGS 2021, currently scheduled for March 24-26, 2021 in Chicago.  We are still hoping to be able to hold an in-person meeting, but even if we have to modify our plans, we will offer the program in other ways.  The theme chosen by Dr. Ranjit Koodali, MAGS Chair-elect, “Rising to the Challenge: Strengthening Graduate Education During Uncertain Times”, is ideally suited to sharing our current experiences and best practices, exploring new opportunities to strengthen graduate education and networking with colleagues.  We look forward to receiving your proposals!

The MAGS 2020 Annual Meeting has been canceled!

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Midwestern Association of Graduate Schools’ 2020 Annual Meeting scheduled for 1-3 April 2020 at the St. Kate Hotel in Milwaukee, Wisconsin is CANCELLED.

All registrations and exhibitor fees will be refunded in full. More information is available at the conference website (https://www.uwlax.edu/ex/mags/). Please cancel hotel reservations as soon as possible.

The Executive Committee is considering the possibly of including those presentations accepted for this year’s meeting for next year’s meeting. Similarly, the Executive Committee is considering alternative opportunities for 3MT participants to present their talks. Stay tuned.

The 2021 Annual Meeting will be held 24-26 March, 2021 at the DoubleTree Hotel in Chicago, Illinois. Please monitor the MAGS website and your email inbox for information regarding this event.

Tentatively, the 2022 Annual Meeting is scheduled at the St. Kate Hotel in Milwaukee, WI for 6-8 April, 2022.

Promoting Graduate Education for the Public Good: Engaging All Constituencies

MAGS members are invited to submit abstracts for contributed sessions for the 76th Annual Meeting taking place on April 1-3, 2020. Discussions regarding the relative benefits of a graduate degree for the individual versus the public have been occurring for over a decade. Leaders in graduate education must use effective communication strategies to advocate for support from legislators, other government entities, and university administrators. We must highlight the role that graduate education plays in developing active citizens who contribute to their communities. At the same time, we must engage faculty with industry leaders to ensure relevant, marketable graduate programming. Abstracts for sessions pertaining to this theme and other issues affecting graduate education are encouraged.

If you are interested in presenting, or co-presenting a session, please submit an abstract to: Julie Masterson (MAGS2020@MissouriState.edu) that includes:

  1. A description, in no more than 300 words, of the proposed session.
  2. An abstract of no more than 50 words for inclusion in the program should the session be accepted.
  3. Contact Information:

MAGS members are invited to submit abstracts for contributed sessions for the 75thAnnual Meeting taking place in St. Louis, Missouri, March 20-22.  Higher education continues to be challenged by shifting political landscapes and changing societal expectations.  Colleges and Universities have responded to these changes by developing beneficial collaborations across campus as well with external stakeholder groups; developed novel degree programs; provided innovative graduate student extracurricular and professional development opportunities; and established novel communication and advocacy structures to inform the campus and the public about the benefits of advanced degrees.   Abstracts for sessions pertaining to this theme and other issues affecting graduate education are encouraged.

MAGS members are invited to submit abstracts for contributed sessions for the 74th Annual Meeting to take place in Grand Rapids, Michigan (April 4-­6, 2018). Colleges and  universities involved in graduate education within the Midwestern United States have often overcome challenges and strengthened efforts in support of graduate education through collaborative endeavors within and across institutions. Please consider sharing those collaborations that have made a difference for graduate education on your campuses by submitting an abstract and being part of the program. Abstracts pertaining to this theme and to other issues affecting graduate education are welcome. Topics that will be of interest to members may include: Cross-­disciplinary and inter-­disciplinary programs and degrees; Alignment of degree outcomes and workplace expectations; Partnering to drive institutional change to support graduate education; Role of Graduate Colleges in facilitating inclusion of diverse viewpoints and experiences in an age of dissent; Team-­based pedagogical strategies in doctoral and clinical professional education; Inter-­institutional and community partners, alliances and consortia and more.

If  you  are  interested  in  leading  (or  co-­leading)  a  session,  please  submit  the  following  to Susan Stapleton (susan.stapleton@wmich.edu).

MAGS 2017 Call for Papers!

MAGS members are invited to submit abstracts for contributed sessions for the 73rd Annual Meeting to take place at the Omni Severin Hotel in Indianapolis, Indiana (April 5-7, 2017).  The theme will be “The Midwestern Advantage.”

Colleges and universities involved in graduate education within the Midwestern United States face challenges and opportunities unique to our region.  A portion of the 2017 meeting will focus on distinctive characteristics of the Midwest and its people, with attention to how the advantages of earning a graduate degree within our region can be recognized, celebrated, and communicated to potential students.  Abstracts pertaining to this theme and to other issues affecting graduate education in the Midwest are welcome.  Please consider contributing an abstract and being a part of the program.  Topics that will be of interest to members include:  recruitment, retention, best practices for mentoring, workforce needs, changing demographics, academic and non-academic career pathways, online and blended education, student preparation for multiple career pathways, transferrable skills, financial support offered by governmental agencies for graduate education, innovative international linkages, program assessment, time-to-degree, financial debt, and more.
